| There are approximately 3,300 United Church congregations (often called "xxx United Church") across Canada. These congregations are organized under approximately 2,250 pastoral charges. In many cases, the pastoral charge consists of a single congregation. But in some areas, particularly in rural areas, two or more congregations make up one pastoral charge.
Using Find a Church, you are able to search for either the congregation or the pastoral charge information.
NEW! Minister Search Option. Beginning in September 2010, you are also able to find United Church ministers serving in pastoral charges, or in select United Church institutions, with their work addresses. Other current United Church ordained and diaconal ministers are also listed, but we cannot provide private address information.
Search Steps
- Search Option:
Select Congregation, Pastoral Charge, Church Structure, or Minister from the drop-down menu to set the type of search.
- Search Criteria:
Search by Congregation or Pastoral Charge: Select one of three choices (the default is Postal Code) and enter your search text.
- Postal Code -- enter one to three characters of the postal code. Entering more may return few or no results.
- City/Town -- by the name of a city or town, sorted alphabetically by church name.
- Church Name -- by the first few letters or words of the church name, or the full church name, if you know it. If you only know a part of the church name, enter the percent symbol (%) followed immediately by part of the church name. All church names that contain that string of characters will appear, sorted first by province or territory (from AB to YK), then by city or town.
Search by Church Structure: You will be prompted to select a Conference, a presbytery within that Conference, and then a pastoral charge within that presbytery.
The result of your search will be a list of congregation or pastoral charge names, appearing in the left window.
If you click on one of these church names, the mailing address, telephone number, and website (if available) will appear in the right-side window. The address will be the mailing address for church mail, not necessarily the street address of the church itself. If you are searching on the congregation name, you will also be given the name of the pastoral charge to which it belongs -- since the address and phone number provided are those of the pastoral charge.
Search by Minister: You will be prompted for a name. The search will turn up any name that includes the string of characters exactly matching the characters you type. For example, you could search by first name or by a partial last name if you are uncertain of the exact spelling. Keep the search name as short as possible, since any discrepancy in the spelling of the name may eliminate the person you are looking for. If your search produces no result, then
- the spelling you have entered does not match our database (e.g., "McDonald" will not show a result for "MacDonald"; "Connie" will not show a result for "Constance"), or
- the person you are seeking is not in our database
The result of your search will be a alphabetical list of minister names, appearing in the left window.
If the minister you choose is serving in a pastoral charge, or in select United Church institutions, then the workplace name, mailing address, telephone number, and website (if available) will appear in the right-side window after you click on the minister's name.
Other current United Church ordained and diaconal ministers will also be listed, but we cannot provide their personal address information. The website will list their presbytery of membership.
Please Note
Our national church records system is designed to maintain address and phone number information at the administrative level, which is the pastoral charge. If, for example, there are 4 congregations in one pastoral charge, the same address and phone number will be shown for all 4 of the congregations. As a result we are unable to display individual addresses for each congregation. |
